I had the opportunity this week to guest lecture at NMIT Fairfield campus (Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE) for their Pre-Press Publishing 1 for the Bachelor Of Writing and Publishing. Of course, it was on WordPress, but that goes without saying!

For two hours I took the students on a journey through the wonderful world of WordPress. As their curriculum was just starting to get into online publishing, my talk was fairly high level. I first explained what WordPress was as well as giving a few examples of the varied types of sites that can be built. I also explained the differences and the pros & cons between WordPress.org and WordPress.com.

Next, I covered the various options found within the WordPress Dashboard and what each of them was for. I also showed how you can easily extend and customise your site with Themes, Theme options, Plugins and Widgets.

I finished off the talk by providing them with a number of resources they could use to further their journey, along with a quick demo of a test site that I had setup on my local machine. The test site was setup with WooCommerce so that I could quickly show the students how they can use WordPress to sell physical and digital products.
